The Night/Day Debate
Ah, yes. One of the most well-known issues of Earthbound that has recently been brought back up is why Day doesn't become Night and vice versa, and also why Ness hardly ever goes out at night. I thought i'd say my piece on this particular subject, and let you draw your own opinions...
First off, how old is Ness? He's not quite a teenager, from what I know. He goes to school, which we know, but is that being used in the general term of any school, or is that a way to determine wether or not he's in highschool? I certainly do not know the answer, but let's go with what we do know. Ness isn't that old, which means he probably isn't allowed outside during the night. Not to mention that he needs loads of sleep (he's not yet reached the "teenage-studying-at-2 AM" phase), and so probably rests during the night and works to rid the world of evil during the day. Hence, you most often see him outside during the DAYTIME.
Secondly, do you know of any store where you can get a flashlight, or find it in a gift box? I don't think you do, and I sure don't. I don't recall it as being a winnable item from enemies or from people for completing side-quests, either, and the reason is because it's not even in the game. So, if you can't see at night, and there's no flashlight available, how often are you going to run around outside during the nighttime? Not that often, i'd say...
Thirdly, evil is not nocturnal.(let's just ignore the whole "vampire" thing for a bit here...) You don't HAVE to go outside at night to fight the Evil Ramblin' Mushrooms, Moles Playing Rough, New Age Retro Hippies, etc. There are plenty during the day to wear you out, and then you sleep at night, just like I said in the first point. I mean, if you just got so darn angry at the evil in the world that you just COULDN'T sleep and wanted to fight all day AND night, then (read my next point):
The SNES was not exactly the best piece of hardware ever developed. Now, don't take this as a diss towards Nintendo, but it in no way can compare to the abilities of the XboX, which I know for a fact can produce the Day to Night transition. How long before the XboX was the SNES released, eh? Think about that. The hardware itself wasn't evolved enough to produce the effect, and so thinking logically that most people would work during a time when they coud see, would be rested, and when all the other people in the area would be awake so that you could interact with them, Nintendo made the larger portion of the game occur during the daytime. Wow, complicated thought processes needed. [occur:r-18 <>]
That concludes my rant. Thank you for reading and have a nice Day. HAHAHAHA!
